    Updated 7/23/08 5:50 PM

Colston, whose 168 catches are more than any NFL receiver through his first two seasons, agreed to a three-year extension that could keep him in New Orleans through the 2011 season, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Wednesday night.

Impacts: Colston, who at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds provides quarterback Drew Brees a big target, surprisingly emerged as one of Brees' favorite receivers during training camp in 2006. He went on to compile 2,241 yards receiving for 19 touchdowns in his first two seasons.

  • Carl Nicks (T) NO

    Updated 7/23/08 4:28 PM

The New Orleans Saints agreed to terms with fifth-round draft choice Carl Nicks on Wednesday, leaving only top pick Sedrick Ellis and second-round choice Tracy Porter unsigned on the eve of training camp.

Impacts: Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Nicks, an offensive lineman, signed a three-year contract. He did not disclose financial terms. Nicks, who is 6-foot-5, 343 pounds and can play guard or tackle, was picked 164th overall out of Nebraska, where he started 11 games in 2007. He played in 23 games for the Cornhuskers after transferring from Hartnell Junior College in Salinas, Calif.

  • Charles Spencer (T) HOU

    Updated 7/23/08 4:28 PM

The Panthers claimed Spencer off waivers from Houston on Wednesday.

Impacts: Spencer hasn't played in the NFL since breaking his leg during his rookie season in 2006. The former third-round pick provides more beef up front for Carolina. Spencer is 6-foot-4 and 337 pounds.

  • Rueben Riley (T) CAR

    Updated 7/23/08 4:28 PM

The Carolina Panthers released Riley on Wednesday.

Impacts: Riley spent last season on Carolina's practice squad.

    Updated 7/23/08 4:28 PM

The Bears and first-round pick Chris Williams agreed to a five-year contract Wednesday on the first day of training camp.

Impacts: Williams, an offensive tackle from Vanderbilt, was the No. 14 choice overall. The Bears announced the deal two hours before their first practice. Financial details were not disclosed. The 6-foot-6, 312-pound Williams is expected to be the Bears' left tackle with John Tait moving from the left side to the right. Williams appeared in 36 games at left tackle and left guard while at Vanderbilt, finishing his college career with 33 consecutive starts.

  • Cody Wallace (OL) SF

    Updated 7/23/08 4:28 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed Wallace to a four-year contract Wednesday, leaving only first-round pick Kentwan Balmer unsigned on the day before players report to training camp.

Impacts: Wallace, a fourth-round pick and 107th overall, was an all-conference lineman at Texas A&M last season. He will back up veteran starter Eric Heitmann on the 49ers' revamped offensive line.

  • Brett Favre (QB) GB

    Updated 7/23/08 4:28 PM

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is monitoring the ongoing rift between the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre. A person with direct knowledge of Goodell's interest said the commissioner has spoken with Packers management several times recently as tensions mounted between the three-time MVP and his team.

Impacts: ESPN.com first reported Goodell's interest in the Favre predicament, indicating that Goodell encouraged Packers general manager Ted Thompson to survey teams around the league to try to find a trade partner in hopes of resolving it quickly. Tampa Bay is emerging as perhaps the most likely destination for Favre, although it is unclear whether Favre would be willing to play for the Buccaneers.

  • Joe Jurevicius (WR) CLE

    Updated 7/23/08 4:07 PM

Jurevicius was placed on the active physically unable to perform list Wednesday as the Cleveland Browns opened training camp.

Impacts: Jurevicius, who caught 50 passes - 29 on third down - last season, has had two operations on his right knee since the end of last season. His recovery took a major setback when he contracted a staph infection.

  • Ryan Tucker (G) CLE

    Updated 7/23/08 4:07 PM

Tucker was placed on the active physically unable to perform list Wednesday as the Cleveland Browns opened training camp.

Impacts: The 33-year-old Tucker broke his hip during mini-camp in May and had surgery in June. He has made solid progress in his recovery, Savage said. Tucker played both right tackle and guard last season after being suspended for the first four games for violating the NFL's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances.

    Updated 7/23/08 4:07 PM

The Rams agreed to terms Wednesday on a three-year contract with King, the team's fourth-round draft pick.
