The NFL has fined San Diego Chargers defensive tackle Antonio Garay $15,000 for a hit below the knee on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in Week 2, a source with knowledge of the situation told NFL Network's Jason La Canfora on Thursday.
The hit came during the third quarter of the Patriots' 35-21 win Sunday when Garay dove and hit Brady in the left knee as the quarterback was throwing. Brady went down awkwardly but wasn't injured. Garay wasn't called for a penalty.
"I'm glad I had a knee brace on," Brady said on WEEI the following day, according to the New England Sports Network. "Those are scary, man, when you've been through those ones before. He got me in a good spot, and I'm glad the knee brace took the brunt of the force. Why I never wore a knee brace before, I have no idea, and why every quarterback doesn't wear one on their left knee I have no idea. It's just so unprotected."
