Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is scheduled to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell this week to discuss fines and penalties he has received from the league this season, Fox Sports reporter and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer first revealed Sunday.
What makes the situation unique is that Suh requested the meeting in New York. Glazer reported that Suh is looking for an explanation of what he's doing wrong while also pleading his case why he shouldn't be receiving fines and penalties.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed the meeting, which will take place Tuesday, in an email to NFL.com.
"Commissioner Goodell and his staff have had many meetings with players, both individually and in groups," Aiello said. "This particular meeting has been in the works for several weeks and grew out of Commissioner Goodell's respect for Ndamukong Suh and Ndamukong's desire to gain a deeper understanding of NFL rules and policies. Ndamukong reached out more than a month ago to the commissioner, who offered him the opportunity to meet with the football operations football people that are responsible for enforcing the rules."
The meeting also will include Merton Hanks, who's in charge of handing out fines for the league; Carl Johnson, vice president of officiating; and Jeff Fisher, former competition committee co-chair and current NFL football operations consultant. The commissioner also invited Suh to bring a Lions coach to the meeting, which comes during the team's bye week.
Suh has been fined $42,500 in his 1½ seasons in the NFL. His most recent fine came during the preseason, when he was docked $20,000 for slamming Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton to the ground.
Suh, the 2010 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, is recognized as a rising star in the league, but he also has garnered a reputation in some circles as a dirty player.
