Report: Giants will be without ailing Umenyiora for 'awhile'

The New York Giants are waiting for test results on defensive end Osi Umenyiora's injured ankle, but initial reports suggest it's a serious setback.

The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that Umenyiora is "going to be out awhile," according to a source. The source also told the newspaper the extent of the injury wasn't known, however, and that Umenyiora was scheduled for an MRI exam Tuesday night.

Giants coach Tom Coughlindidn't have an update during a conference call with reporters Tuesday, saying only that Umenyiora and injured linebacker Mark Herzlich (ankle) were being examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Umenyiora didn't return after suffering the injury during the first quarter of Monday night's 49-24 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
