The joining of forces between Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and ex-Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson continues to be a topic of discussion between the two parties.
Citing multiple league sources, the Miami Herald reported Thursday that Ross and Peterson continue to entertain the notion of Peterson assuming an executive role with the Dolphins. Ross and Peterson have denied reports on this topic throughout the week.
"Both want to make it work," one NFL source told the newspaper. "(Stephen) Ross wants more management experience" in the front office.
One source told the Herald that Peterson had not reached a deal as of early Wednesday, with his specific responsibilities and compensation still needing to be agreed upon. If Peterson does in fact join the organization, the newspaper reported, he potentially could serve as the team's executive vice president of football operations.
Peterson worked for the Chiefs as team president, CEO and general manager from 1989 to 2008, a period in which Kansas City went 176-141-1 with nine playoff appearances.
When he fired head coach Tony Sparano this week, Ross made it clear the team's goal was to find a "young Don Shula," and that general manager Jeff Ireland will remain in his current role and assist in the coaching search.
