Vikings' Webb-fueled comeback over 'Skins clouds QB situation

The Minnesota Vikings don't officially have a quarterback controversy -- not yet, anyway.

But the Vikings could be one more scintillating Joe Webb performance -- a distinct possibility considering Christian Ponder's tenuous status for Week 17 after he suffered a concussion Saturday -- from facing an uncomfortable situation this offseason.

Webb rallied the Vikings back from a 13-10 deficit Saturday, going 4-of-5 passing for 84 yards with two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground as Minnesota sprinted past the Washington Redskins for a 33-26 win.

Saturday's performance marked the second time this season Webb has wowed in relief of an injured Ponder, who went down with a head injury at the start of the third quarter. Webb nearly led the Vikings to a comeback win over the Detroit Lions in Week 14.

Asked whether Webb has earned the right to compete for the starting job after the game, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier failed to mention Ponder, nor did he firmly state that the team's 2011 first-round draft pick is firmly entrenched in the starting role.

"That's a good one," Frazier said following Saturday's win, via The Star Tribune . "Because of some of the things he does, and what it does for the rest of the team, you can't ignore him. It's something you're going to have to take a real hard look at going forward. He's done it. He did it a season ago, as you recall."

Frazier was refering to Webb's 1-1 record in relief of an injured Brett Favre at the end of the 2010 season.

Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe took Frazier's remarks one step further, openly stating that Webb has what it takes to be a starter in the NFL.

"When we need him, he comes through," Shiancoe told the newspaper. "He's got a track record now. As a quarterback, he's extraordinary. I think he's definitely a starting quarterback in this league, put in the right position."
