Colts center Saturday might call it quits after 13 seasons

Veteran Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday told the Indianapolis Star he might retire after 13 seasons with the team.

New general manager Ryan Grigson fired head coach Jim Caldwell Tuesday, continuing an organizational overhaul that began earlier this month when front-office leaders Bill and Chris Polian were let go. Saturday is among the older Colts players whose contracts expire after this season.

"I have my own decision to make long before I worry (about) what the Colts are going to do," Saturday said. "I'm considering not playing."

Saturday elaborated on his thought process in an interview with Ross Tucker and Solomon Wilcots on Sirius XM NFL Radio Wednesday.

"My decision is going to be based on my wife and my family," he told Tucker and Wilcots. "I have to go through that process myself first and decide what I want to do for us and make the right decision. What's going on with the organization really doesn't have any effect at this point."

Undrafted out of North Carolina, Saturday signed with the Colts in 1999 and became the full-time starter in 2000. Since then, the Colts have gone 127-65, with a 9-9 record in the playoffs. He has been the starting center for nearly all of Peyton Manning's career in Indianapolis, helping lead the team to a victory in Super Bowl XLI.

However, with Manning injured and unable to play this season, the Colts went 2-14, prompting the team to begin rebuilding and casting Manning's future in Indianapolis in doubt.

"I can't say I'm shocked," Saturday told the newspaper regarding the decision to fire Caldwell, "but I am sad because for the past (10) or so years, he's not only been my coach but my friend."

Saturday added: "This game can be hard when times go bad, and that's the situation we're in."
