Vikings' Peterson says knee is improving, getting stronger

Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman pledged Thursday to scour the free agent market to find more big-play threats for Christian Ponder.

Spielman largely was talking about adding playmakers to the Vikings' wide receiving corps, but a bigger boost for the offense is the return of a healthy Adrian Peterson, and the Vikings got good news on that front Friday.

Peterson, who underwent surgery on Dec. 30 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, told KFAN-FM that he's scheduled to run Feb. 28.

"I'm definitely making improvement. I'm starting to get my muscle tone and strength back into the legs," Peterson said, via Scout.com. "I'm happy with the progress I've made so far. I'm extremely happy."

What Peterson told the radio station falls in line with Spielman's most recent comments on the running back's rehab. Spielman said the team has been "very pleased" with Peterson's progress, and he is on track to being "extremely close to being ready" for the start of the season.

Peterson, who's been working out in Houston, stressed during the interview that he's been careful not to push his rehab too quickly, adhering to what the Vikings head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman has told him.

"He's making sure I'm doing the right things," Peterson said. "It feels strong, but he doesn't want me to push it too much."
