Vikings release longtime OL Hutchinson, Herrera, CB Griffin

The Minnesota Vikings have released starting offensive linemen Steve Hutchinson and Anthony Herrera and cornerback Cedric Griffin, the team announced Saturday.

The moves saved the Vikings more than $13 million for the 2012 season.

"It was a tough decision as we move forward and prepare for the upcoming season and the future of our organization," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said in a release. "All three individuals have meant a great deal to the Vikings organization both on and off field over the years. We wish all of them the best and thank them for their service to the Minnesota Vikings."

Hutchinson, a five-time first-team All-Pro pick, was the most significant departure. Hutchinson left the Seattle Seahawks in 2006 to sign the richest contract for a guard in league history and gave the Vikings plenty of bang for buck until injuries slowed him down in recent seasons.

Hutchinson and Herrera formed the interior of the Vikings' offensive line for the past five seasons, as the two started in at least 10 games each of those seasons.

Griffin had eight interceptions in six seasons with the Vikings.

The move probably does not come as a surprise to the 35-year-old Hutchinson. Hutchinson was scheduled to make $6.95 million in 2012, and acknowledged last month that he could be a salary cap casualty in the Vikings' youth movement.

General manager Rick Spielman hinted recently that moves like this were coming.

"Sometimes, when you move on from guys, it has nothing to do with their character and what they brought to the team. Sometimes, you just have to make some tough business decisions," he said.
