Drew Brees had plenty to say Tuesday when it came to the season-long suspension of his coach, Sean Payton. The New Orleans Saints quarterback was less forthcoming when asked about his potential participation in the team's offseason workouts.
Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times asked Brees if he planned to attend the workouts, which start Monday. (Presumably with an interim coach in place.)
"What I can say in regards to my contract is that we're continuing to work hard on a long-term deal, and that's really all I can say about it," responded Brees, who received the Saints' one-year franchise tag but hasn't yet signed it.
Farmer: "Will you be there Monday?"
Brees: "We're continuing to work on a long-term deal."
That exchange wasn't exactly great theater, but it was telling. Last offseason, Brees famously led the most organized player-only workouts in the NFL. This year, Brees isn't expected to be in attendance when the offseason program starts. And his coach is suspended for the entire season.
The magical afterglow of the Saints' Super Bowl XLIV title feels like a lifetime ago.
