When will Ryan Tannehill take over as the Dolphins' starting QB?
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is looking at his quarterback competition with an open mind.
"Out there is where we're going to find out about Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore and David Garrard," Philbin told SI.com's Peter King, pointing to the field. "I don't remember a master plan that said, 'Here's when Ryan's going to play.' If there is one, I was never told about it. We'll let them come to work, and the best man will win."
The pressure to play Tannehill early will be immense. If the Dolphins are worse than 3-3 at the bye week, we suspect Tannehill will get the call before the team's Week 8 game against the New York Jets.
The Dolphins didn't take a lot of rookies we anticipate having an immediate impact. Running back Lamar Miller could be a solid backup running back. Jonathan Martin might win the job at right tackle. Miami's free agency additions were minimal.
The Dolphins are only going to win early if they improve from within, despite big changes with the offensive. They need something to show that the Philbin regime is different. That Ryan Tannehill is different than all the failed Dolphins quarterbacks. They need to sell hope.
They can accomplish that by winning some games early, but it's more likely Tannehill will be forced to learn on the job. (Whether he's ready or not.)
