Terrell Suggs labels Achilles injury a partial tear

Terrell Suggs hasn't given up on a return to the field in 2012.

One day after the Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker underwent surgery to repair a torn Achilles' tendon, Suggs revealed the injury was diagnosed as a partial tear.

"Everything went good, he was in and out," Suggs told The Baltimore Sun of the operation performed by noted surgeon Dr. Robert Anderson. "There is only a small incision, and he said it was not as bad as some thought it was, which I had already been told."

Suggs told the newspaper he visited two doctors before surgery. One described Suggs' injury as full tear; the second as a partial tear, which Suggs confirmed after surgery.

The NFL Defensive Player of the Year vowed to return by November at the latest, which flies in the face of protocol. Injuries of this nature normally require a year of rehab.

"I'm 29 years old," Suggs said. "I don't miss games. I'll be returning soon."

Classic Suggs. Over his nine-year NFL career, he's missed only three games and appears motivated to silence his doubters. The Ravens, meanwhile, turn to Courtney Upshaw to step in as a pass-rushing threat off the edge. No matter how the rookie plays, there's no replacing what Suggs means to the Ravens. His return might decide their fate in 2012.
