Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley has gone out of his way to not speak to the media since his second arrest this offseason on May 27. The Lions haven't made Fairley available, and the second-year player has repeatedly ignored requests of Lions reporters to talk.
On Friday morning, he was finally ready to speak. Sort of. He released a statement through the team's website.
"After taking some much-needed time to reflect on recent incidents, and after conversations with my advisors, teammates, and members of the Lions organization, I would like to make the following statement:
"I want to personally apologize to my fans, teammates and the Detroit Lions organization for bringing this unwanted attention to our team. I recognize my actions were inexcusable and I personally need to uphold the expected standard of behavior of a professional athlete. I do not take for granted this opportunity and feel blessed everyday to play in the NFL.
"At this time, I am fully cooperating with the Mobile, Ala. Police Department. I am now focused on moving forward and committing my focus to football. I would like to thank everyone for your concern and understanding."
Fairley and running back Mikel Leshoure are at risk of getting suspended by the NFL after multiple incidents in one offseason. They both contributed to the Lions accounting for 24 percent of the league's arrests this season.
Like Jacksonville Jaguars wideout Justin Blackmonwisely said this week, words don't mean a lot at this point. The Lions organization wants to see a change in Fairley's actions -- on the field and off.
