There are no promises Tarvaris Jackson will still be the Seattle Seahawks' starting quarterback in 2012, but he appears to be in surprisingly good position to retain the gig.
ESPN's John Clayton reported Sunday that Jackson will work with the first team when training camp begins next month.
As Pete Carrolltold Around The League last week, the signing of Matt Flynn to a $19.5 million contract in the offseason didn't guarantee anything to the former Aaron Rodgers understudy. Or, as Carroll colorfully put it, "On the field, he ain't carrying around any money in his pocket."
Carroll maintained Flynn would get a fair shot at earning the job in camp -- Jackson, Flynn and rookie Russell Wilson will split reps -- but he didn't come off as a guy in love with Seattle's new acquisition, either. According to Clayton, there might be a reason for that.
"(Flynn) hasn't wowed anybody in all the offseason program," Clayton said (via Rotoworld). "And because of that, when they start training camp, Tarvaris Jackson will be taking the first snap. ... It's still gonna be a three-way competition. Because of that, Flynn's going to have to pick things up and wow everybody or at least take control of it during camp. He's not done it yet."
Matt Flynn got $10 million guaranteed in his deal with the Seahawks. That kind of money is almost always a ticket to the starting lineup, though it appears an outlier of a situation is developing in Seattle.
