After the Buffalo Bills fired coach Chan Gailey on Monday, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said he's not too keen on being a backup.
"For me personally, I think I want to play," Fitzpatrick said, via the Buffalo News. "That's just who I am. I think I'm a starter in this league and want to play. I'd hate to play the 'what if' game right now, I guess."
Fitzpatrick signed a seven-year, $62.2 million contract with the Bills last season, but the Harvard graduate is viewed mostly as a system quarterback or Gailey's personal project who didn't pan out. There is a good chance a new coach will want to move on and develop his own quarterback.
General manager Buddy Nix's status with the Bills has yet to be announced. He already has said he'd like the chance to draft a franchise quarterback, so even if he remains with the team, Fitzpatrick looks to be on his way out.
The Buffalo News also reported Monday night that CEO Russ Brandon met with owner Ralph Wilson, but Nix did not make the trip, generating still more question marks about the GM who has a 16-32 record in three seasons in that position.
