Ranking the FBS conferences: SEC keeps its No. 1 position

Last week's showdown between Mississippi State and Alabama provided a major shakeup in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, but what impact did it have on CFB 24/7's ranking of the FBS conferences? Here's our weekly look at every team within each of the Power Five conferences (see navigation tabs at top of story) and each of the FBS conferences overall.

1. SEC

Can two league teams make the playoff field? SEC fans seem to think it's a given.

2. Pac-12

The conference has five teams in the College Football Playoff selection committee's top 19 -- and four are from the South Division.

3. Big 12

The conference could have two teams finish 11-1 -- and neither could make the playoff field.

4. Big Ten

Ohio State creeps higher and higher in the selection committee's top 25 each week; can the Buckeyes creep into the top four? Four other league teams are in the top 25.

5. ACC

The ACC again has four teams in the selection committee's top 25, but just two are in the top 20.

6. Mountain West

The Mountain Division has four teams that potentially could finish with at least 10 wins.

7. American Athletic

If Memphis wins the league -- and the Tigers currently are tied for first -- Justin Fuente deserves some national coach-of-the-year mention.

8. Conference USA

Marshall already has clinched the East Division title, while a win over Old Dominion would give Louisiana Tech the West Division title this weekend.

9. Mid-American

The MAC West is vastly better than the MAC East. Bowling Green is going to be the only one of the seven East Division teams to finish above .500 in the regular season.

10. Sun Belt

The Sun Belt is the only league in the nation that has three teams currently riding losing streaks of at least six games.
