4. Joe Montana (Chiefs) vs. 49ers, 1994
In 1987, at the peak of Montana's career, the 49ers acquired Steve Young, who wound up starting eight games that season because of injuries to Montana. His performance was near flawless (120.8 passer rating), and despite Montana being Montana, talk surfaced the following season about who should be the starter. There were also rumors of Montana being on the trading block. Regardless, a quarterback controversy was born. It didn't last long, however, as Montana led the 49ers to back-to-back Super Bowl wins.
An elbow injury forced him to sit out the 1991 season and most of 1992, and he was replaced by Young, who had set in motion his own Hall of Fame career. Montana was traded to Kansas City in 1993, and led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game. It wasn't until 1994 when Montana got his first chance to face the 49ers. He led the Chiefs to a 24-17 victory, tossing two touchdowns to match Young's interception total in the game. He retired after the season.
