Patriots bring back LB Murrell for playoffs

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots re-signed linebacker Marques Murrell on Wednesday.

The Patriots originally signed the four-year pro as a free agent March 10, then cut him Sept. 13 after he played in the season-opening, 38-24 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Murrell spent the past three seasons as a backup with the New York Jets, appearing in 26 games and making 21 tackles. He originally was signed in May 2007 to Philadelphia's practice squad as an undrafted free agent from Appalachian State, but he never played for the Eagles.

The Patriots have a bye this week before facing the Jets, Kansas City Chiefs or Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round of the playoffs.
