We can't know yet whether or not Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert will be a bust. (Reasonable minds disagree.)
This much we do know: Jaguars general manager Gene Smith believes in Gabbert and is doing everything possible to support his guy. The Jaguarsmoved up two spots Thursday night to draft wide receiver Justin Blackmon No. 5 overall.
"He's got an edge to him," first-year Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey told The Associated Press. "He's one of these guys who doesn't think he can be covered. That's pretty important at that position with that kind of confidence, that you can line up and dare somebody to try to stop you and believe that you can't be. I like that edge."
The Jaguars (over)paid big money for free-agent wide receiver Laurent Robinson. And now they did everything possible to acquire the top receiver in this draft.
"If we're productive in the passing game, it will help in a lot of areas -- the run game, other receivers, tight ends, backs," Mularkey said.
Jacksonville only gave up a fourth-round pick (No. 101) to move up two spots. We have our doubts that Blackmon is a true No. 1 receiver, but he was the best receiver in this draft. The Jaguars got him.
Gabbert is out of excuses.
