Free-agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress is en route for a workout with the New England Patriots, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NFL Network and NFL.com.
ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the workout Sunday.
Burress, who turns 35 years old on Sunday, caught 45 passes for 612 yards and 8 touchdowns for the 2011 New York Jets, but has remained a free agent throughout the offseason and the start of training camp.
After retaining Wes Welker (31 years old) with the franchise tag and re-signing Deion Branch (33), the Patriots added Brandon Lloyd (31), Jabar Gaffney (31) and Donte Stallworth (31) this offseason, giving them the oldest receiving corps in the NFL.
Given the age of the current Patriots receivers, and that Lloyd and tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez make Burress redundant in the red zone (where Burress was most effective last season), the chances of the Patriots presenting Burress with a birthday cake shaped like an NFL contract appear slim. As Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston astutely points out, Sunday's workout appears to be more about the Patriots compiling their emergency list than indicating an imminent signing.
UPDATE: NFL Network also learned that the Patriots are interested in free-agent offensive lineman Chad Clifton, a two-time Pro Bowl selection who spent the last 12 seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
