With his team driving into field-goal range -- and precious seconds ticking away against the St. Louis Rams -- Washington Redskins wide receiver Josh Morgan turned a third-down catch into the boneheaded play of the year.
Washington's first loss of the season -- 31-28 -- soon followed.
Trailing 31-28 with 1:27 on the clock, Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III completed a third-and-8 pass to Morgan for 7 yards. It wasn't enough for the first down, but Morgan's grab would have positioned Billy Cundiff for a 48-yard field-goal attempt. That all floated away when Morgan whipped the ball at Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan.
Finnegan had pushed the receiver after the tackle, but officials flagged Morgan's retaliation 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct, sending the ball back to the St. Louis 44.
Cundiff had no chance at the ensuing 62-yard field-goal attempt, and Morgan had no business losing his cool. We wouldn't be surprised to see coach Mike Shanahan part ways with the middle-tier wideout. This one cost the Redskins a heartbreaker.
