New York Jets coach Rex Ryan revisited the past this week when talking about his defensive plan for stopping Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush on Sunday.
"Reggie Bush is, everybody knows, he's a special player," Ryan said at a media session this week, according to ProFootballTalk.com. "He's got great speed, that's the first thing that jumps out at you. He's shifty. He runs with a little more power than people give him credit for. ... Obviously we have to do a great job of getting a lot of guys to him and then get him on the ground. Put some hot sauce on him, if you will."
That last comment refers to a remark made by Jets linebacker Bart Scott way back in 2006, when Scott played for the Baltimore Ravens and Ryan was the team's defensive coordinator. The Ravens were hosting the New Orleans Saints, who had drafted Bush No. 2 overall that year.
Scott said after the game that he tackled Bush with particular relish on one play as payback for a previous "cheap shot."
"The media darling, aka the golden boy of the NFL, tried to take a cheap shot at me, so I told him I was going to put some extra on it," Scott said of Bush. "He can do all those shakes he wants, but I wasn't going anywhere. I put a little hot sauce on that ankle."
Bush aggravated a previous ankle injury on the play and left the game, and there was debate afterward about whether or not Scott had intentionally tried to hurt Bush.
The former Heisman Trophy winner was held to 16 yards on five carries that day in a 35-22 Ravens victory.
Bush is enjoying a career resurgence in Miami: He rushed for 1,086 yards last year, and through two games this season he has 241 yards on 40 carries.
