Hurricane Sandy forces precautions for NFL, teams

The New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets have told players and non-football personnel not to report to team facilities Monday because of Hurricane Sandy, team sources told NFL Network's Steve Wyche.

The Giants and Ravens indicated coaches and front-office personnel would report to work for at least part of the day, the sources said. The Ravens announced the cancellation of a fundraising event for Goodwill, which was scheduled for Monday night.

The Jets only were scheduled to practice Monday and Tuesday this week because of their bye, but coach Rex Ryan told players to take the week off and return next Monday, according to a team source.

The Giants quickly cleared out of Cowboys Stadium after their 29-24 win over the Cowboys on Sunday to get home with the storm bearing down on the East Coast. A spokesman for the Giants tweeted their arrival Sunday night.

Earlier, the NFL announced that only essential personnel will be at its Manhattan offices on Monday, although normal league business still will be conducted.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced that their facility will be closed on Monday.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 mph as of early Monday, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began churning up the Eastern Seaboard.

Forecasters say the center of the storm is expected to be near the mid-Atlantic coast on Monday night, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic. Experts say the rare hybrid storm that results will cause havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.
