Let's be clear about something: We have a mess in Kansas City, where the Chiefs are 1-6 and shifting into free-fall mode.
Much was made of Brady Quinn taking over at quarterback, but he didn't last more than a quarter into Sunday's 26-16 loss to the Oakland Raiders before leaving with a head injury. That brought the embattled Matt Cassel back into the lineup, and his evaluation said it all.
"I haven't been part of a season ... where this much has gone wrong," Cassel told Dave Skretta of The Associated Press.
If the Chiefs have a strength, it's their ground game, but coach Romeo Crennel had only vague explanations for why the team's best back, Jamaal Charles, saw just five carries in the loss.
"Now, that I'm not exactly sure," Crennel said.
Reporters asked if Charles was healthy. "As far as I know," Crennel said.
Baffling and foggy answers.
Crennel, of course, isn't a fire-and-brimstone guy. He was criticized during his stint in Cleveland for being too chummy with his players on a team that floated into an abyss.
Crennel told reporters that's not happening this time around. He said he hasn't lost this team -- and maybe not -- but the pattern unfolding in Kansas City is a disturbing one.
