We love coming to work on Sundays because something new happens every week. (Also: It's borderline criminal we get paid for this.)
This week's brand new twist: 98 seconds ran off the clock in between plays during the first half of Sunday's tie game between the St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park. Let's set the scene.
Quarterback Alex Smith completed a 14-yard pass on third-and-14 with 13:40 left in the second quarter for the 49ers. The officials attempted to stop the game shortly thereafter to bring the chains out for a measurement. The only problem: No one ever stopped the clock.
What happened after that is a little confusing, but this much we know: The 49ers ran their fourth down play with 12:02 left. Roughly one minute and 12 seconds were lost. The clock is not reviewable by replay. Once the next play ran, it was too late to make a change. We contacted the NFL, but they had no official comment at this time.
