Funny but true fact of NFL life: Overtime rules remain a shadowy area for many players.
Donovan McNabb became the poster boy of this reality in 2008, when he admitted he didn't know a game could end in a tie. Four years later, a new overtime system is in place, but the same lack of awareness persists.
St. Louis Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola was a stud in his return to lineup on Sunday, finishing with 11 catches for 102 yards in a 24-24 tie with the San Francisco 49ers. Amendola believed he had more time to pad those stats.
Amendola wasn't alone.
"I didn't know you could tie," 49ers safety Dashon Goldson said, via the Bay Area News Group. "When I saw both sides walking onto the field, I was like, 'Where's everybody going?'"
In fairness, these are unusual circumstances. The NFL has had just five ties since 1990. Coincidentally, Amendola was on the playoff practice squad of that Eagles team McNabb piloted to a tie in '08. That was the last deadlock before Sunday.
Perhaps it's time for NFL training camps to include a Scantron test of some kind on the subject. After all, knowledge is power.
