Howard Mudd to retire after Philadelphia Eagles' season ends

Philadelphia Eagles offensive line coach Howard Mudd said he'll retire after the end of the season.

"I decided quite a while ago," Mudd, 71, told the Philadelphia Daily News on Thursday. "I gotta go be a grandpa. That was the plan two years ago, and Andy (Reid) talked me out of it. But this time, it's going to be permanent."

Mudd spent 12 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before retiring for the first time in 2009. Mudd came out of retirement before the 2011 season, when Reid made the decision to promote then-offensive line coach Juan Castillo to defensive coordinator.

The results have been poor for a line ravaged by injuries this season, but Mudd seemingly has no regrets in returning for a short stint with the Eagles.

"Oh yeah," Mudd said. "It's all about the people. The players you coach. The coaches you work with. The owner. But it's time."
