Carolina Panthers advised to make Kansas City trip

The Carolina Panthers have been advised by the NFL to travel to Kansas City, Mo., after Saturday morning's fatal shooting at the Chiefs' facility, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Panthers interim general manager Brandon Beane says the NFL has advised the team to travel as planned. The team charter was scheduled to leave at 1:15 p.m. ET.

Chiefs linebacker Jovan BelcherĀ died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Saturday morning at the team facility, Kansas City police confirmed. The shooting occured at 8:10 a.m. local time.

Belcher fatally shot a 22-year-old woman described by police as his "on-again, off-again" girlfriend at a nearby residence before driving to the training facility, a police spokesman told NFL.com's Albert Breer.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement Saturday. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

UPDATE:According to a statement from the Chiefs, "after discussions between the league office, coach Romeo Crennel and Chiefs team captains," the team will play Sunday's game against the Panthers.
