There has been lot of back and forth through the media about the status of New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton's contract for next year.
Payton remains unsigned, and it sure sounds like it might stay that way for a little while.
Fox Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer reported Sunday that the Saints and Payton are "not close" to a new deal at the time. If the contract isn't done soon, Payton might shop his wares.
"People thought this is between the Saints and Dallas," Glazer said on Fox's pregame show. "If this thing doesn't get done ... (Payton) is going to open it up everywhere. He's really not going to limit his options."
Translation: The Saints better give Payton the money he wants soon or he'll approach this offseason like any big-name free agent. This is how the game is played. Payton has been playing it for the better part of this season. He's turning the screws on the Saints for a bigger contract because he can.
