San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh describes tight end Vernon Davis as being "on course" to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Comments from Davis himself tell us otherwise.
Davis still must pass a contact test before being cleared to return in the wake of the concussion suffered on a whopping hit by Seattle Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor last Sunday night. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Davis said he felt "OK" and "all right" on Friday. He acknowledged he was "taking it easy" in practice.
Davis was asked if he was confident he'd play Sunday.
"A little bit," he replied. "I know my teammates are, but I've just got to get a little more comfortable."
Chancellor was penalized for his hit on Davis, but not fined. Replays showed the safety delivered a clean shot to Davis' chest.
"It was pretty brutal," Davis said. "I don't think it was legal, no. I saw it on the news, but I didn't really go in and look at it. I didn't want to see it."
With Mario Manningham out for the year with a knee injury, Davis could be in line to finally regain his footing in the 49ers' passing offense. He has just five receptions in the last five games, simply unacceptable given the playmaking ability he's shown in the past.
He'll have to get back on the field first. Don't expect that to happen before the playoffs.
