The New York Jets don't have a general manager, but they have started to look at candidates to fix their beleaguered offense.
Former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinwegis on Jets' interview list, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Albert Breer of NFL.com reports that the Jets have expressed early interest in Cincinnati Bengals assistant Hue Jackson as their offensive coordinator. Mornhinweg's interview could happen as early as Friday. Commence Jets fan teeth gnashing.
It's possible the Jets won't even have a chance to interview Jackson. Breer reports that the Carolina Panthers have requested permission to speak to Jackson about their open offensive coordinator job. That job suddenly became vacant when Rob Chudzinski got the top job in Cleveland.
It would be surprising to see the Jets start to interview potential coordinators without a GM, but ultimately the coaching staff is Rex Ryan's domain. When he talked about finding a fresh, agressive offensive mind that matched his approach on defense, Mornhinwig probably did not come to mind for most Jets fans.
The former Detroit Lions head coach worked under Andy Reid in Philadelphia from 2003-2012, mostly as an offensive coordinator. Reid chose to hire Doug Pederson as his coordinator in Kansas City. Scuttlebutt in Philly suggested that Mornhinweg and the Eagles would have parted ways even if Reid stayed with the Eagles for another season.
