Titus Young was a New Year's Day-sized headache for the Detroit Lions, but pure ability keeps the troubled wide receiver employed for the time being.
The St. Louis Rams successfully claimed Young from waivers Tuesday. The move comes one day after the Lions cut Young, their second-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
The deadline to make a waiver claim on Young was Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.
The Rams are likely emboldened here by the success of Janoris Jenkins. Many NFL teams were scared off by the cornerback's back story on draft day last year, but the Rams took their chances on Jenkins and hit big.
This is a low risk/high reward move by Rams coach Jeff Fisher, who hopes to tap into Young's considerable potential. The Rams averaged just 18.7 points this season, ranking them 25th in the league. The team might be looking to reboot the position with Danny Amendola, Brandon Gibson and Steve Smith all unrestricted free agents.
During the tail end of his wildly successful Motown Sabotage Initiative, we learned that Young reportedly said he was better than Calvin Johnson. That's silly, but Young will make Sam Bradford's life easier ... if Fisher can get through to him.
If not, Young will find himself back on the street very quickly.
