Hours after cutting ties withKyle Vanden Bosch, Stephen Peterman, and Titus Young, Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew made it clear that he won't be standing on the sidelines once the free-agent market opens early next month.
"We were non-players in free agency last year. I do think that we plan to make some moves," Mayhew said, via the Lions' official website. "We need to make some changes. Obviously, things aren't going in the right direction."
Following Wednesday's transactions, the Lions are now roughly $5 million under the salary cap. The next major move of the offseason is expected to be a new deal for Matthew Stafford that could reach $100 million or more while shaving more money off the 2013 cap.

Despite the disappointing 4-12 record last season, head coach Jim Schwartz insists the club is not going through a rebuilding phase.
"When you say rebuilding it sounds like you're starting from the ground up," Schwartz said. "We have a quality quarterback. We have a pretty good wide receiver. We've got some good defensive tackles. We have some strengths on our team that we can build around."
Schwartz and Mayhew better hope their new acquisitions pull through this upcoming season, or they could both join Young as Detroit exiles.
