INDIANAPOLIS -- Chris Johnson can rest easy knowing his NFL Scouting Combine record is safe.
West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin and Texas wideout Marquise Goodwin put on a show Sunday morning in the 40-yard dash, coming within striking distance of breaking Johnson's record time from 2008.
Goodwin posted an official time of 4.27 seconds, and Austin clocked in at 4.34. Goodwin's time fell a hair short of the 4.24 Johnson posted before being drafted by the Tennessee Titans. Texas A&M's Ryan Swope matched Austin's 4.34 time.
The 5-foot-9, 174-pound Austin was a sensation on WVU's pass-based spread offense last season, and NFL Network analyst Marshall Faulk called him "Percy Harvin and Wes Welker wrapped into one."
Austin also labeled himself "the all-around best player in the draft," but he clearly has competition for the fastest. Goodwin, a two-time Texas Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year, showed the type of speed that could entice NFL teams to take a chance on him at the 2013 NFL Draft.
TCU wideout Josh Boyce posted an official time of 4.38. We promise you this group's speed has scouts melting.
