The San Diego Chargers have succeeded in their goal of landing a new cornerback in free agency.
U-T San Diego reported Wednesday night that the Chargers agreed to terms on a four-year, $20 million contract with cornerback Derek Cox. The Chargers later confirmed the agreement. The contract will be signed Thursday, pending a team physical.
The contract reportedly includes a $5.2 million signing bonus and $10.25 million in guaranteed money.

Cox, 26, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, proving himself to be an above-average starter. His biggest issue has been health: He has missed 17 games over the past three seasons.
Last season, Cox finished with four interceptions and permitted just one touchdown pass. Quarterbacks had a passer rating of 44.5 against him, the lowest figure among all NFL cornerbacks, according to Pro Football Focus.
There's clear talent here, and the Chargers acted aggressively Wednesday night after losing out on Jerraud Powers to the Arizona Cardinals earlier in the day.
Cox was supposed to meet with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday. Instead, he'll likely be signing on the dotted line in Southern California. A potential sleeper move by new Chargers general manager Tom Telesco.
