PHOENIX -- The NFL will not extend the "Rooney Rule" to the hiring of offensive and defensive coordinators, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Tuesday at the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix.
Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, namesake of the decade-old rule intended to expand minority hiring in the league, told NFL Network on Sunday that he did not expect the rule to be extended because it could slow down the overall hiring process.
The NFL will hold a symposium for coaching and GM candidates to help prepare candidates for interviews and to help expose them to future employers.
Clubs also will be encouraged not to prevent candidates from interviewing for better opportunities.
