Browns CEO Joe Banner said Thursday that when Cleveland opens training camp, quarterback Brandon Weeden will be the starter -- but with a caveat.
Newly signed signal-caller Jason Campbell will compete for the job, Banner told ESPNCleveland radio, via Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer. Banner also reiterated that the Browns won't rule out selecting a quarterback in the 2013 NFL Draft.
In what figures to be a crowded house, the writing is on the wall for backup quarterback Colt McCoy. He isn't a fit for coach Rob Chudzinski's vertical passing attack, but Banner told the radio station McCoy won't be released -- for now -- but the Browns are open to trading him. That lines up with what a team source told NFL.com's Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport on Wednesday.
It's clear Weeden isn't viewed as the long-term answer for the Browns. Team brass have begun to re-imagine the position and McCoy eventually will be replaced by a prospect who fits into Chud's offense. Arizona prospect Matt Scott -- who the Brownsreportedly plan to meet with next month -- is on their radar, and nobody's role is safe in C-Town.
