The Jake Long acquisition in St. Louis marked an offseason coup for the Rams, but not for Rodger Saffold.
Last year's starting left tackle isn't pleased about moving to the right side, and Rams coach Jeff Fisher acknowledged that nobody in the building has been able to reach Saffold since Long agreed to a hefty four-year, $34 million contract on March 18.
"We've been trying to reach Rodger, and he's not returning calls right now," Fisher told Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Thursday. "But we'll get things settled, and Rodger's a big part of our future and a big part of our plans on offense."
Saffold's agent, Alan Herman, has said his client would be agitated with a position switch, but Fisher said nobody from the player's camp has requested a trade.
"No. It's just been quiet," Fisher said. "And we're trying to reach Rodger just like we're trying to reach all of our other players. We stay in touch with our players. Maybe he's traveling and is on his way back."
Saffold's contract expires after next season. Re-upping with the Rams as a right tackle instead of a starting bookend would mean a significant pay cut. Maybe Fisher is right, maybe Saffold is touring the British forests or lost on a voyage Down Under. It's also possible he's looking to take a permanent vacation from the Rams.
