Ryan Tannehill would go No. 1 this year, Gil Brandt says

The Buffalo Bills already have signed Kevin Kolb, the Oakland Raiderstraded for Matt Flynn on Monday, and the Arizona Cardinalscontinue to loom as the landing spot for Carson Palmer.

As Around The League's Marc Sessler points out, NFL teams are telling us loud and clear what they think of an underwhelming quarterback draft class.

It's not just the quarterbacks, according to NFL.com's Gil Brandt. It's a "unique draft" with fewer future Pro Bowl selections in the top 10 picks than in drafts of the previous two years.

"I think if Ryan Tannehill were in this draft, he'd be the top pick," Brandt told Sports Illustrated's Peter King on Monday. "And he was (eighth) last year.

"Here's how I'd put it: Between 11 and 50, there's a lot of good players. But they're very close between 11 and 50," Brandt said. "And I'd say if you took the 45th player in 2013, he'd be slightly better than the 45th player in 2012."

It's a sentiment shared by NFL Network's Mike Mayock and other draft analysts regarding this year's crop.

That shouldn't obscure Brandt's smaller point on Tannehill, though. Although he was overshadowed by the success of the other rookie quarterbacks, Tannehill joined Robert Griffin III and Cam Newton as the only rookies in history to throw for 1,000 yards in his team's first four games of the season.

An impressive athlete with requisite arm strength, Tannehill drew high marks for his pre-snap recognition and post-snap awareness of defensive alignments. One national analyst even predicted that Tannehill will be an "absolute rock star" for the Miami Dolphins.

He would be on the Kansas City Chiefs' radar as Andy Reid's hand-picked quarterback of the future had his entrance to the NFL been delayed a year.
