New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes was noncommittal in December when asked if he would be ready to return from his Lisfranc injury by training camp. Fast forward six months, and coach Rex Ryan is equally noncommittal about his No. 1 receiver's status.
"He's doing a decent job but we'll see how he is in training camp," Ryan said via, the New York Daily News. "There's a possibility he starts out on the PUP (list), I'm not sure, but he seems to be doing well."
After originally undergoing surgery in October to repair the fracture, Holmes needed another procedure in February to remove plates from his foot. Lisfranc injuries are infamous for lingering, especially for skill-position players who must display the ability to cut sharply.
If not for the injury and a bloated $7.5 million salary, Holmes would be among the NFL's prime trade candidates this summer. Holmes is set to count $10.75 million against the Jets' 2014 salary cap. The Jets won't keep him around at that price -- and perhaps at any price after playing a key role in the team's media circus and locker-room rifts of the past two years.
