Seemingly every injured player in the NFL says he'll be "ready for training camp" during the offseason. We'll find out over the next week what players were overly optimistic.
Brandt: Training camp 101
Having spent a lifetime in football, Gil Brandt knows exactly what NFL teams must do to make this crucial time of year count. **More ...**
On the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the proximity to the start of camp has not dimmed the optimism whatsoever about cornerback Darrelle Revis. Coach Greg Schianosaid at a Thursday press conference that Revis will be on the field "in some capacity" next week. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport notes Revis will not start camp on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
On the field and "fully cleared" aren't exactly the same thing, but the Buccaneers repeatedly have promised that Revis will be ready to suit up in Week 1. He should help bolster the most improved secondary in the league with safety Dashon Goldson added to the mix and second-year pro Mark Barron maturing. That's the plan anyhow.
As we've learned repeatedly in the NFL, many of the best-laid offseason plans still go awry.
