Remember that trade last week in which the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sent cornerback Eric Wright to the San Francisco 49ers? Forget it ever happened.
NFL.com's Albert Breer reported Monday, per a source, that Wright failed his physical with the 49ers, canceling the trade. Breer reported that the Buccaneers would release Wright, who was arrested on a DUI charge earlier this month. The 49ers had agreed to send a conditional 2014 draft pick in exchange for Wright.
The Buccaneers later confirmed that the trade had been voided, and Wright was released.
It's unclear why Wright failed the physical, although he had an Achilles injury at one point in 2012. Wright also might be at risk of a league suspension because he also was arrested on a DUI charge in 2012, although that case eventually was dropped.
We'd be surprised if Wright didn't land with another team, although he might have to wait for his legal trouble to shake out. The 49ers conceivably still might wind up with him, but Nnamdi Asomugha's job looks a little safer now.
