CHICAGO -- Ohio State has yet to determine a punishment for Bradley Roby, but Urban Meyer indicated Thursday that Roby will not have much wiggle room when he re-joins the team after a likely suspension.
Roby, a junior, was arrested early July 21. He was charged with misdemeanor battery and spent the night in jail after allegedly striking a bouncer in the chest during a bar fight in Bloomington, Ind.
"I think there will be discipline involved," Meyer told NFL Draft 365 at Big Ten media days. "I imagine there will be a suspension involved. He'll be on a very short leash."
Losing Roby would be a very significant loss for the Buckeyes -- he is ranked 12th on NFL.com draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah's Talented Top 50, which ranks the top 50 players in college football.
No Buckeyes are ahead of him on the list. Roby is the team's top talent and last season led the nation in passes defended with 19, which tied the Ohio State single-season record.
Roby was scheduled to attend Big Ten media days, but was replaced by senior safety Christian Bryant after his arrest. However, the weekend arrest was apparently not the first sign of trouble for Roby. Cleveland.com reported Bryant had been told ahead of Roby's arrest to be ready to fill in for Roby because he had been having issues with grades.
We asked Meyer if he is starting to worry about whether Roby is moving in the wrong direction.
"I know Roby pretty well," Meyer said. "I know his mom very well. I know deeply what's in his heart very well. So, am I worried about (him going in the wrong direction)? I am worried about it. Do I think that will happen? Hopefully that won't happen."
