Bryant McKinnie practiced with Baltimore Ravens teammates Friday. This was a good development.
McKinnie didn't make it to the end of said practice, a 2½-hour affair under sunny skies in Owings Mills, Md. This was a not-so-good development.
Success is coming in baby steps for McKinnie, who was held out of practice Thursday after reporting to training camp over his prescribed weight.
"He worked very hard," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said after practice Friday, according to The Associated Press. "He's carrying a little too much weight right now. So, with this heat out there, it made it tough for him to finish."
Struggles with conditioning are nothing new for McKinnie, who has dealt with the issues dating to his early years with the Minnesota Vikings. He lasted just over an hour Friday before having to shut it down.
"I know he's been working hard to get some of the weight off, so he's not eating as much maybe as he would normally," Harbaugh said. "But he's got to tough it out, and he's going to have to perform through that and get in the kind of shape we need him in and that he wants to be in."
McKinnie appears to be sheepish about the situation. He reportedly entered the Ravens' training facility through a side door Friday to avoid the media. We don't imagine it's been a pleasant two days, though we're sure it will get better.
McKinnie knows that better than anyone.
