Report: Broncos' Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie hurt

The troubles continue for the Denver Broncos.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was carted off the field during Wednesday's training camp practice with a "bad left ankle sprain," The Denver Post reported. The sixth-year pro was hurt during a one-on-one drill with rookie wide receiver Quincy McDuffie, according to the newspaper.

Broncos coach John Fox told reporters after practice that the team remains encouraged the cornerback will be prepared to play Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.

"He's done it before, so I'm not overly (concerned)," Fox said. "But anytime you miss time, I'm concerned."

Rodgers-Cromartie is the Broncos' second-highest-paid player on defense after signing a one-year, $5 million free-agent contract during the offseason. It's been a trying week (and offseason) for the Broncos, who lost starting center Dan Koppen for the season after he suffered a torn ACL on Sunday.

Broncos team executive John Elway recently called Rodgers-Cromartie the best cover cornerback in the NFL, according to SI's Peter King. The team is counting on DRC to pair with both Champ Bailey and slot man Chris Harris in a secondary that has a chance to be special if Elway is correct. It appears that Denver has avoided disaster.
