We have reached the stage of the preseason where teams show their hands. Starting quarterbacks are named. Roles are clarified.
In Miami, the running back competition is notable for its lack of clarity. Daniel Thomas had 12 first-team snaps in Dolphins practice Monday, compared to Lamar Miller's 10, according to The Miami Herald.
Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said the running back competition is "neck and neck" and both Thomas and Miller would get plenty of snaps if the season started today. Those words echo a report from Dolphins analyst Joe Rose, who said, via coaches, that Thomas was in a tight battle with Miller.
Miller has been one of the most popular breakout candidates in the NFL, with our own Chris Wesseling leading the charge. Even Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill previously said Miller was the clear starter.
This news will worry a lot of fantasy football fans out there, but we'd remind them that talent always rises. Miller might start the season splitting carries with Thomas, but he should earn a bigger role if he's as talented as everyone thinks.
In the meantime, the Dolphins want to see more. They don't see Miller as a true featured back yet.
