Oklahoma State plans to use both redshirt senior Clint Chelf and redshirt sophomore J.W. Walsh at quarterback in its season opener against Mississippi State, head coach Mike Gundy said Thursday.
Chelf started the final five games last season and was named MVP of the Heart of Dallas Bowl after completing 17-of-22 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns in a 58-14 romp over Purdue. Chelf threw for 1,588 yards and 15 touchdowns against six interceptions in the eight games he played in, stabilizing the offense after injuries to Walsh and Wes Lunt, who transferred to Illinois this summer.
Walsh was named the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year by conference coaches last season, posting 1,564 passing yards and 13 touchdowns against three interceptions while completing 66.9 percent of his throws in 10 games. Walsh also offers the potential for designed runs and scrambles, rushing for 290 yards (5.8 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns.
Gundy clearly wants the Bulldogs' defense to prepare for two different styles of quarterback ahead of next Saturday's neutral-site game at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
