New England Patriots' 23-21 win over the
Buffalo Bills from Week 1 on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. ET.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the New England Patriots' third-year pro has a dislocated bone in his left wrist, according to a person briefed on the injury. Vereen underwent surgery Monday and could miss more than a month, NFL Media's Albert Breer reported on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access."
Fox Sports' Jay Glazer first reported the news, noting that Vereen injured his wrist on the first play from scrimmage in Sunday's 23-21 season-opening win over the Buffalo Bills.
That's not the only bad news for the Patriots' offense. Rapoport reported that tight end Zach Sudfeld is dealing with a pulled hamstring that puts his status for Thursday night's game against the New York Jets in doubt, according to a person informed of the injury.
The 1-2 punch is a big blow for the Patriots. Vereen is one of their biggest offensive weapons, finishing third on the team with seven catches for 58 receiving yards. Stevan Ridley is New England's starter, but he was benched Sunday after losing a fumble.
The Patriots are very deep at running back with Ridley, LeGarrette Blount and Brandon Bolden all capable of carrying the ball. But the team needs Vereen's hands in the passing game, where rookies Kembrell Thompkins and Sudfeld struggled Sunday. Rob Gronkowski (back, forearm) did not make the trip to Buffalo. The Patriots will have to rely on Julian Edelman more than ever with Vereen and Sudfeld potentially out.
