Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Wednesday that starting wide receiver Charone Peake has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season.
Peake, a junior, was injured in Monday's practice. The Tigers are off this weekend.
Peake (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) has excellent speed and athleticism. He had started both of Clemson's games and made eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown this season after catching 25 passes last fall. He hasn't redshirted and should return as a junior next season.
His spot in the starting lineup likely will go to junior Adam Humphries, who had 41 receptions last season. Humphries doesn't have Peake's speed and is more of a possession receiver.
Depth becomes an issue now behind Sammy Watkins, Martavis Bryant and Humphries. While redshirt freshman Germone Hopper and true freshmen T.J. Green and Mike Williams have talent, all three are relatively unproven. Hopper did have six catches for 66 yards and two TDs last weekend, but that was against FCS foe South Carolina State.
True freshman tight end Jordan Leggett could become a weapon as the season progresses. He missed the opener with a knee injury, then returned to play sparingly against South Carolina State. Leggett has the best receiving skills of the tight ends.
