Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher's return from his knee injury has not gone as planned this month. The Bears finally admitted as much Tuesday.
"The treatment that we were giving Brian, he didn't respond as well as we wanted it to," coach Lovie Smith said Tuesday, via The Associated Press. "So we had it scoped this morning, a minor scope on his knee. Everything came out the way that we wanted it to."
This was a surgery that Urlacher tried to avoid. He spent all offseason recovering from a knee injury that he did not get surgery performed on during the offseason. This news raises questions about if the injury was handled properly.
The Bears are thin at linebacker. Nick Roach has played in the middle in place of Urlacher; Geno Hayes is starting on the strong side.
